Information Technologies in Antiquity

Wilfrid Laurier University & University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON

The Canadian Society of Biblical Studies, at its annual conference during the Congress of Humanities, will be hosting a special discussion group, “Information Technologies in Antiquity”. The conference will be held at the end of May 2012 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. This seminar integrates a number of different academic disciplines and brings them into conversation with Biblical texts and other forms of religious communication in the ancient Western world: cognitive psychology and social memory; sociology, media theory, literary criticism and communication theory; ritual studies, and technology studies. We explore how information (oral and written, informal and formal) was recorded and disseminated in the ancient world, and the implications for religious groups of the formats or media of communication. In 2012, there will be two sessions. The first will have three invited papers. The second session will have submitted papers, and the chair welcome proposals relating to the theme and areas noted above.
